Hi,

Does anyone know why there is not a external thunderbolt drive with the capability to also be a nas drive?

I have seen numerous multi bay DAS devices such as:

Drobo 5
Areca
CalDigit T4

The Areca has a LAN port however it does not state whether or not it can also be used as a NAS also.

I deally i would like to transfer files using the thunderbolt out of the house but when at home i would like to connect it to my home network so i can use it as a media server.

Is there an adapter i can use to turn the CalDigit T4 into a ntworked device?

I see APPLE do a thunderbolt to Gigabit adapter, i'm thinking this won't work but i am usure

Help Please

Thanks

so if i powered up the thunderbolt storage in another room....

connected a thunderbolt to gigabit ethernet to the back of the storage device

connect powerline adapters within my home network and the router

connect an ethernet cable from the powerline to the gigabit adapter on the back of the storage unit

would that work?

I have no experience with thunderbolt (drives or networking) so I can not give you any answer. I will say that NAS unit usually have more processor embedded in them than do direct attach storage (thunderbolt, eSATA, USB). I doubt that there is sufficient "smarts" to support NFS or other ethernet based file system ... but I am just speculating.
