I have a 212 Evo on my latest build and I have of course been noticing all the after market heat sinks as of late have been going a different route as opposed to the older ones. With my current setup on my old build with an old Scythe heat sink the fan has a huge rad located right on the processor itself with the fan blowing directly on the rad towards the CPU. Of course the newer ones have the huge rad with the fan blowing parallel to the CPU, not blowing directly in the direction of the CPU. I was wondering why the switch. I assume the latest setup for the heat sinks is best otherwise it wouldn't be so popular. What are the pros and cons of both ways?

The introduction of heatpipes was the game changer.

Well I understand that......to a point, ha. I am just basically asking why the fans of the current heat sinks aren't blowing directly towards the CPU itself and blowing away from it on the rad, essentially just cooling the rad and not the rad and cpu at the same time.

Why blow warm air against the CPU? The whole point of the CPU cooler is to cool the CPU. The heatpipes in the CPU cooler transfers heat away from the CPU into the cooling fins where the fans will remove the heat from the fins by blowing air over them.

Valid point. I just wasn't sure how much more efficient the current process was over the old way of doing it, where the fans are blowing on the CPU and rad at the same time. I was just thinking that the metal from the heat sink contacting the CPU is now the soul source of drawing heat away from the CPU without the aid of air in any way. I assume the current way of just cooling the rad has to be better since it is the only method I am seeing used now.

Just wondering about that is all, and why the change.
