Hello, I am MA student in Media Design and Communication and for my project I am looking for personal stories around the topic of data loss and I collection stories on the topic.

In a society where most things of information is stored on hard-drives, CD-ROM and old floppy disks we loss a lot of information over the years.

How did you lose the information?
What impact did it have one you?

Many thanks
- Thomas

I fix PCs for a living and always advise anyone I work with to back at least two backups of any important data and keep one of them in a fireproof box. Despite having given this advice for twelve years, some customers come back after a few years with a tale of woe involving hard disk breakdown with total data loss.

I slave for hours over recovery software to get back what I can - sometimes with some success; not always - but it's always I who loses sleep when I have to tell someone I can't recover their precious photos.

My Linux machine beside me is working through one such right now.

Same story as Saga Lout above (almost anyway). You tell people and tell them and tell them and few make backups. Whenever I get a rig in for repairs/upgrades, etc, I generally make a backup of their data and maintain it for them (unless they decline) - then if they have a crash at least the part that I have can be restored easily.
