I just got the Samsung 850 evo and have it hooked it with nothing on it, and two other HDDs. I want to transfer everything from my C: drive (drive Windows is on) to the SSD. There's more than enough room (500gb SSD, 240gb on current HDD). Could I just use the Samsung Data Migration tool to transfer everything over? From there I would delete and partition stuff. And I wasn't sure if the data migration tool is useful or if it deletes the data on the C: drive after cloning it.

Also, I don't have the sata to USB cable (don't know if it's required) but I have the power and data cables hooked to it.

Yes, you would need to clone the drive. The software you mentioned, Data Migration Tool can do this for you. It will not delete the data as it clones it.

Yep. Samsung migration tool software would work fine. I would suggest that once you are done, temporarily disconnect your old C: drive (just remove the SATA data cable) until you have the boot order set in your BIOS and have confirmed that everything is booting and loading Windows properly from the SSD. This will eliminate any possibility of confusion since you will have your operating system installed on two different drives at that point! When you reconnect the old hard drive, figure out a plan to get the operating system off of it (ideally with a re-format).

On a desktop, you shouldn't need a USB cable. Just a SATA power connector and a SATA data cable.
