Looking to upgrade ram on laptop

I have a hp pavillion g4 laptop and need to know exactly what product to replace it with. I have 4gb now and researched it and found this model is upgradable to 16gb. I know its ddr3 and so-dimm but not exactly sure of speed and others. Do I need to put hp ram or can I use another company like kingston or crucial? I'm more familiar with their quality than just "cheap" ram. Can someone give me some additional info or better yet point me in the direction of a link to exactly what I need (ebay, newegg, tigerdirect, etc..). Would be appreciated!

Thanks!

it just says sdram which could be a problem. But a solution would be under clocking to the jedec standard or it probably shouldn't matter as the mobo should clock it to what it can handle i think. Best bet go to some hp help(chat/email) and ask them what kind of ram you can upgrade in that specific model. Because theirs a good chance since it says sdram that if you don't have the specific model as the other ram in the pc, it won't be stable/ work properly.

I don't want to use the 4gb chip anymore. I want to remove it and replace with two 8gb chips to make 16gb, which according to the specs is the max. Can I do that?

As far as reputable companies go i know of g.skill they make good ram. Pny is ok, too just g.skill is better in my opinion.

Price isn't really an issue, I'm more concerned with quality. I've always known Kingston and Crucial to be leading brands, but I've heard a lot of good things about G.SKill as well and seems to be preferred choice of many.

I'm looking at a Ripjaws series on newegg, do you think this one will work too?

Overlclocking you would look at cas latency. Theirs a trade off of faster cl speed vs bigger mhz size. And vice versa it only really affects photoshop other video editing rendering, then games. Generally speaking lower the cl the better. But after a certain mhz size it becomes pointless as the price vs performance benefit is so minimal it's not worth it. You would also want a lower cl number as you use more channels. So if it's two dimm sticks dual channel 9 would be fine at 1666 mhz at 3 channel you would want at least 9 or something lower. 4 etc.

Does processor type matter? AMD vs. Intel...I have an AMD.

It depends on the applications mostly, but generally intel makes, "better" cpu's single core performance and multi threaded applications go intel, and overclocking intel. Though if you have amd gpu and apu. With the upcoming, "mantle" software it's supposedly going to give a boost to amd gpu/apu. Whether that "boost" is quantifiable in a mantle vs intel has yet to be seen. So yeah personal preference. Also you have a laptop you definitely cannot upgrade the cpu most likely not the gpu either. Unless you want to do some heavy diy modding.

Sorry, let me clarify...I meant does it matter which RAM I buy? Some of the chips I've been looking at, specifically G.Skill Ripjaws, says compatible in 3rd gen/4th gen Intel chips. Does not mention AMD. Does that mean they only work with Intel?
