Hello I just got an i5 4590 and I was wondering if I should invest in an aftermarket cooler for to CPU to increase its life span. So would it be worth investing in an aftermarket cooler? If so what would be a good aftermarket air cooler?

Solution
If you're not overclocking and the build is not otherwise compromised, an aftermarket cooler serves no purpose.... it will outlast the PC's relevance. You're essentially buying a 1000 pound scale so your wife can check to see how fast she's losing her baby weight.

Yes, the Hyper 212 can be dangerous for novice users. Cooler effectiveness is based upon clamping pressure and TIM manufacturers will tell you the ideal is between 55 and 70 pounds. As there are no 'stops' on the mounting system, it's very easy to over tighten. This can result in physical cracking of the MoBo or just breaking of the embedded circuit traces within, without physically breaking the substrate that the circuits are embedded in. I have actually had the...

Ok thanks but I heard it has a terrible mounting system. Is that true?

I have actually had the experience of "repairing" a unbootable system by unscrewing a hold down screw a half turn.

But, I also have had 3 users bring me a non working box w. Hyper 212's that we weren't so lucky. in two of the instances, we not only needed to replace the Mobo but also the CPU as 1156 MoBos were no longer available.... so a 1155 MoBo req'd a new 1155 compatible CPU.

Solution
The stock cooler is fine, but it spins at full speed and is noisy when the PC is powered up. If that doesn't bother you, then it's a good cooler.

Yes of course I am probably not going to buy an aftermarket cooler for a CPU at stock if the stock cooler is fine and will keep the CPU nice and cool.
