Unable to access my external HDD

Hello
I recently purchased an external hard drive and it was working fine. It was attached with my laptop and I turned the laptop off. When I turned the system on later, I was unable to access my external HDD. I ran CHKDSK (which took a long time) and it found no errors. I can see my data through partition recovery software but cannot access anything. I tried taking ownership of the drive by following these instructions (http://www.preyerplanning.com/take-ownership-of-entire-hard-drive-in-windows-7.pdf) but it fails to apply the changes to the drive and says that access is denied.
I think I know what may have caused the problem. I had mounted an iso image on daemon tools from my external HDD when I shut down my laptop (as mentioned above). And I did not unmount it before shutting down. Could it have started the problem? The problem is the same when I connect it to other laptops. Another thing, when the external HDD was in working order the last time, the drive letter assigned to it was H but now it is J. Please help me fix this problem. I can't afford to format it since I have 1TB data on it that I really really need.
