I would go with GTX 970 because of low power consumption, but R9 290x is a good option too.

When you select a card, google it and see how well it´s rated by newegg consumers, to avoid buying a card with known malfunctions.

EDIT: I made a mistake with the price range at your price range best options would be GTX 770 and R9 280x, 285, 290 (powercolor).
