I have an old Desktop which i wish to upgrade for personal use.

Windows XP SP3 32bit
8GB Ram
Intel Core 2 Duo E4500 (Which Supports 64bit)
150GB HDD

I tried to use my friends Windows 8 64bit Installation Disk and i kept getting prompted "Setup.exe is not a valid 32bit application".

Thought that was a bit strange so i extracted the ISO and created an Bootable USB. Changed my Boot settings to USB first and it still launched Windows XP. Still no luck so i plugged it into my Windows 8.1 laptop and the installer ran without a fuss.

Can someone explain what the problem is? I've ran a Windows 7 Upgrade Adviser and it says its supported

That's awesome to know, just now to figure what's causing it not to boot the USB? I've read that some people have had to upgrade to VISTA before they upgraded to 7. Would that be my case?

If you're booting (or trying to) from the USB, and doing a clean install....no upgrade is needed.
You're doing a whole new install.

Now...as to why it isn't booting from the USB is a whole other question.
