Hi

I built a new PC this weekend with the following components

Amd FX8350
Saphire Dual R9 280
8gb of 1866mhz ram
gigabyte 990fx ud3

.....and here's the thing, I used my v old 650 watt power supply. Everything was going fine and then I loaded BF4. loaded the game and then pc turned off. So i booted it back up and tried again and then there was a pop and smoke when battlefield started.

I know this question has been asked a lot before, but I was just wondering what the likely hood of my other components being damaged was. I mean has this happened to people and usually they're fine or is it pretty common for psu to screw other things. I know there's no way to tell until i get a new PSU(tomorrow).

I'm guessing my GPU was pulling more power as it started BF4. Do you think a power supply that could not produce the power could damage other parts?

Also this is my first post, great forum by the way guys. Really detailed helpful explanations.

Even a good quality 650w unit is enough.Don't worry.
You didn't say what type of power supply this was?

650 us more than enough for that machine, so either it was just defective or a cheap power supply. Most nicer power supplies the damage usually stops at the power supply. However I've seen cheaper powersupplies take motherboards and other componenets with them.

Corsair is known for their good quality psu,but their cx,cs and vs series of PSUs are not good.I'd get a good 750w unit.

Hey thanks mate. You sure 750'll be enough? I thought it would be but I used a cooler master calculator and got 840W and then I used the Newegg one and then got over a 1000w. Which seemed pretty ridiculous.

I've got two HDDs and a Dvd drive but still that seems crazy
