Solution
If you need a schoolwork computer, I'd probably look at something lower end, you don't need a particularly powerful computer to do all that. 300-400 dollar price range should do fine. Personally I'd go for one powered by an AMD APU mainly because they tend to have stronger graphics, in case I needed to fire up something like Minecraft or Runescape if I have some free time but, Intel would be just fine too. Laptops are pretty disposable anymore, buy a cheap one, if it breaks or needs upgraded in 2 years, just throw em away and look for a new one. Cell phones and tablets becoming more feature-intensive has driven laptop prices cheaper than they've ever been for entry level.

Hell, when I was going to college a little over a year ago, I used a 5 year old Dell with a Core2Duo, was left behind by my sister when she joined the Navy. Had one of those Nvidia chips in it that were recalled (she didn't know about it), I put a copper shim over it, redid the thermal compound and fired it up good as new.
