Having trouble with fans on EVGA GTX 980 SC w/ ACX 2.0 cooling

Noticed the fans weren't spinning at all after installing the card. Decided to test out some games, figuring it had to get hot before they would start, but nope, the card got all the way up to 70C, with nary a single spin from the fans.

If I open EVGA PrecisionX 16, the fans will finally start spinning for some reason. I set a custom fan curve, and if I leave it minimized, it works like it's supposed to.

Is EVGA PrecisionX 16 supposed to be running for them to work? Kind of annoying to have to deal with it, but I do have it set to start minimized to mitigate some of this annoyance, but it would really be nice to have it work without the program open.

Any thoughts, help?

''One thing to note, and something I didn’t particularly like, is the way the cooler is set to work by default. Out of the box, the fans do not spin when the card is ilding and only kick in should the GPU become too warm. While this means the card makes absolutely no noise at all, it does leave the idle temperatures at around 50°C.

Though others may feel differently, I was not comfortable letting the card idle at those temperatures. While the card is safe at this temperature, I would highly recommend users download PrecisionX and make use of the fan curve editor to ensure the fans are at least spinning a moderate amount at all...

So, I must leave Precision X open/minimized at all times for the fans to work like I want?

For what's it worth, my idle temperatures were under 30c out of the box. And as I said, they got up to 70c in game, and still the fans never kicked in.

do you have the lattest drivers installed.hitting 70c with no fan activity is surely thermally great however not acceptable.! i would ensure some fan activity is always present or at least to kick in over 50c! see if a driver update makes any difference!
