Well this is my current pc:
AMD Phenom II x4 B55 processor 3.3ghz, 4gb ram, mobo-Asus M4A77TD, Pny 560 Ti

As you can see its quite old and surely needs an upgrade or 2. This is what I was thinking of upgrading to.
I5-4690k
MSI Z97 Gaming 5 Mobo
samsung EVO 250 SSD
12gb ram
windows 8.1

As for the graphics card I think I'm going to wait for the 960 ti, I've had bad luck with any AMD cards in the past and I dont want to pay the price of a 970 and a 960 is too weak. So my question, is right now a good time to upgrade? I dont want to upgrade my cpu if a new Intel generation is right around the corner is it going to be worth it now or to just wait ? I want something that will last me a few years and not be obsolete in a few months.

It is probably almost time. My recommendation is to hold off just a little bit longer. The reason being that Intel will release the Broadwell based desktop CPUs soon which should have some pretty good improvements. Right now if you do it, before the year is out something better will be made that is like your CPU but better in every way basically. Compared to if you wait and get Broadwell which will be out later this year, you won't need to worry about that happening for two years probably.

Any idea on the time frame of Broadwell release? will the equivalent cpu of the i5 4690k be similar in price, a lot more powerful? Also will they be used on the Z97 motherboards or will a new model be released aswell?

They will use the Z97 motherboard.

Best estimate for the release is within the next 3 months. Intel's roadmap dictated the first half of 2015 for release, and they have been already releasing chips for mobile platforms based on the design. Likely its finished and they are just building up a stockpile of the CPUs before release in order to make sure they have enough for the launch.

For the performance, its completely up in the air but is still worth waiting to see this close. Its possible that it will be a lot faster right off. Even if it isn't though, the 14nm process will greatly reduce power consumption and heat, so it should overclock extremely well.
