Long story short, I have trisli gtx 980s which have a fan hitting/heat issue. I believe that removing the backplates on the top two cards can fix my issue however the screws are not just from the top of the card they go from the bottom into the top too. I'm just fishing for some help as I know that someone has done it on this exact card but there's no tutorial or anything. It is going to just be all screws or is there a real risk of ruining the card by taking it apart?

Thank you,

Solution
Don't.

The backplate is used to provide rigidity. Removing it will cause the cards to sag/warp when they heat up. If you think you have issues with then touching now, wait til the metal fan shroud from a top card droops down and shorts a resistor on a bottom card because there is no backplate to block it.

Instead, see if you can insert a plastic or foam bumper between cards to provide a gap for fan clearance and airflow. Or go down to 2-way SLI.
