I have a BioStar TA870+ motherboard running a AMD Phenom II X2 processor AM3 socket. AMD's website says this motherboard will accept the Phenom II X6 processor. Will there have to be a bios update before running? Was wondering before I buy.

check the biostar site instead, that's where you will find a bios update. the cpu support list will have a minimum bios version to work with the x6's. if it's not on the list it's not supported. the problem here is some boards don't support 125W cpu-s such as the phenom x6.

Another consideration is that the Black Edition Phenom II x6 1090T or 1100T can hit 140w TDP when overclocked. If the board says it supports 140w, then you should be OK.

They run great at 4.0GHz. But they also use more power than normal.

Make sure your Biostar board has good cooling on the VRMs and can handle the additional current draw. The x6 isn't quite the monster as an FX 8 core, but it will still need good power to run properly without cooking your board.
