I just built a new PC. It works fine with WoW and Battlefield: Hardline. But when I load up Starcraft 2 or Heroes of Newerth, It will freeze for 0.5 - 2 seconds, then catch up really quick(like in fast forward). It does this about 1 or 2 times every couple minutes.
Here's what I have tried so far:
-Adjusted various settings in game
-Installed all Windows Updates
-Upgraded VideoCard Drivers
-Upgraded SoundCard Drivers
-Removed SoundCard and used onboard audio
-Ran intel's processor test (Passed)
-Ran memtest86 (Passed)
-Moved the games to another hard drive

Still having the same issue after doing all the above. Here are my Specs:

-Rosewill Thor V2 case
-MSi X99S SLI PLUS Motherboard
-Intel Core i7-5820k 6-Core processor(12 cores with hyperthreading)
-CoolerMaster Hyper 212 EVO CPU Cooler
-32GB(4gb x 8 G.Skill Ripjaws RAM
-Gigabyte Nvidia Geforce GTX 970 4GB Gaming video card
-HT Omega Fenix 7.1 Surround SoundCard
-EVGA 850w 80+Bronze Power Supply
-64GB M2 SSD with Windows 7 Professional installed
-256GB SSD For Games
-120GB SSD For Games
-2TB HD For Storage
-LG Blu-Ray burner

I've ran 3dMark, here's the results from 2 tests:
Firestrike - http://www.3dmark.com/3dm/5741380?
Skydiver - http://www.3dmark.com/3dm/5741457?

Any idea on what to try now?
I have another identical video card on the way to run in SLI. I will first try the new one out solo to see if that resolves the issue.
I'm at the point where I want to return to my i5 Gateway PC, as it had no issues what so ever, lol.

Looks quite impressive and my first guesses are thrown out. I've seen disk drives and MOBO cause this but I think that is ruled out. Since you have a second card on the way try that card out in a separate PCI slot and remove the original card first as you state. The fact that it is occurring in 2 of 4 games puts more weight on it being the video card than anything else. No two games are written the same and these two may use more or less of certain features, DX 10 VS DX 11 VS.

I don't know the frame rates that you are running at. You may try to lower the FPS as a test to see if the problem resolves itself. You're on the right path to solving the issue though.

Yeah, my other PC is running a 660 Ti and never had any freezing issues. Thought about popping that one in the new one to see if it fixed anything while I wait on the other 970 to arrive. Thanks, I'll give it a shot and post again the results. If anyone else knows of anything to try, I'm all ears!

1. The Hyper 212 is kinda outta place on that build ..... I generally only use that in builds under $1,000 so I'm curious as to what temps you are showing. I don't think that's the problem given the games in question but just to rule it out, run these two and post your results.

RoG Real Bench Stress test 15 minutes
Furmark 30 minutes

2. Let's look in Event Viewer at the System and Application logs for any messages about the time of your rubberbanding.

3. 64 GB is kinda small for an OS drive. Would suggest moving temp files and page file to another drive.

4, Play the game in windowed mode at 1920 x 1000, with task manager loaded and at the bottom of your screen. Rank the items in the process tab by CPU Usage (click on COPY column header) and move most the TM window down off the bottom of screen so you can see the top 5 or 6 programs in that 80 pixel space below the game window. The game should be 1st in the list.... if something is jumping in and stealing COPU time, yu should see it jump tot he top of the list for a few seconds. Identify whatever it is.

5. What order are the drives connected in BIOS / MoBo. General rule is....

Boot Drive = Lowest numbered Intel SATA Port
Games Drive = 2nd lowest numbered Intel SATA Port
Applications / Data Drive = 3rd lowest numbered Intel SATA Port
Backups Drive = 4th lowest numbered Intel SATA Port
Opticals

6. Yes, I would test without the sound card and sound card drivers uninstalled. If ya gonna use the on board, don't want the card drivers installed and visa versa.

7. Check MoBo Manual for RAM placement

8. Run OCCT GPU and CPU tests ... does same thing as many other utilities but useful because it graphs the voltage on each rail ..... look for % variation on 3.3, 5 and 12 volt rails over say 30 minutes. Is PSU fan going on under load. Anything > 5% violates the ATX standard .... you don't want > 2.5% for moderate overclocking ..... or > 1% if looking for maximum 24/7 OCs.

9. Is anything OC'd if so I imagine you tries stock settings ?

10. Anything going on network wise ? Downloading ? On line activity ? That slow / speed up thing is called "rubberbanding" when it is related to internet connection.

I'm at work but will try what you asked on some of these when I get home.
1 - I'm too lazy for liquid cooled, so I went with a heatsink/fan above stock coolers. CPU Temp never goes over 65degrees under load.
2 - Will try later
3 - Yeah I noticed this a bit later after updates and such, got about 8gb remaining.
4 - I have 2 monitors and keep Afterburner up in the second screen, monitoring my temps and load. Will try later
5 - My Boot drive is in the M2 port on the Mobo, not sure if it boots up before the standard sata or not. The rest follow the general rule.
6 - Tried both to no avail, even tried disabling sound(in bios) altogether with no luck.
7 - All slots are filled - 8 x 4GB. Max supported is 128GB.
8 - Will try later
9 - Both CPU & GPU were OC'd, have also tried stock with the same issue.
10 - Maybe some Netflix streaming, but that hasn't affected the other PC.

What other Heatsinks/fans would you suggest for this build?

1. Air coolers kick butt across the board on CLC type liquid coolers across every price range. But the Hyper 212 is always described as a great budget cooler .... meaning it's a great cooler for budget builds. It's also very easy to over tighten the clamping mechanism and break your $200 MoBo. A $60 Phanteks for example would drop your temps by 7 - 10C.

4. Then by all means put the utilities up on the 2nd screen. However, also try using Windowed rather than full screen mode. I have seen this "solve problems" of may types but have no idea why.

6. I knew from original post that you physically removed the card; wasn't sure if you removed the drivers as well.

7. Best avoid that .... puts double the load on the memory controller, increases heat and negatively impacts overclocking .... 4 x 8Gb next time around.

I used to use the Hyper 212 in builds up to about $1,250 in cost..... with the Phanteks now selling usually at $60, I haven been able to get it into $1,050 builds. Here's my rule of thumb.

$30 - Hyper 212, beats everything in its price range

$60 - Phanteks PH-TC14PE - beats everything including all CLCs in it's price range

$100 - Noctua DH-15 - beats everything including all CLCs in it's price range

$140 - Swiftech H220-X / 240X beats everything on market including all CLCs in it's price range requires custom water loops to top it.

Furmark stress test - The GPU never went over 65 degrees, and I averaged 70fps. There were no files or any results to copy from, other than the display when the test was running.

Again, no results with the real bench either, except a benchmark result: Mon Feb 16 2015

----------------------------

Same thing though, the GPU temp stayed below 55 with this one, and the CPU temp never went above 60.

With Furmark, the only thing we are interested in is GPU temp as shown on the screen at the end of 30 minutes

With RoG Real Bench, ya wanna run the Stress Tests not the Benchmark .... the only thing we are interested in is CPU maximum core temps temps at the end of 15 minutes. GPU load is irrelevant s the GPU is not being put under much load.

If ya want to record actual min max and average values, you'll need a utility to do so. If you don't have it already, grab HWiNFO64 to record core temps (install and run "sensors only").

Fumark - end GPU temp was 64 degrees
RoG - Couldn't figure out HWinfo, here's a screenshot that also shows min/max from Afterburner & other info. Started it just before the test.
msi.png

That image doesn't tell me anything as I can't mouse over or read anything (is that max - 60C ?). Where are you getting stuck w/ hardware info .... downloading, installing loading, reading ?

1. Start here: http://www.hwinfo.com/download.php
2. Click on download installer / (local US for me)
3. Download the exe file to your desktop or location of your preference.
4. Double click on the hw42_450.exe file
5. Click Run
6. Click Finish leaving the Start HWinFO64 boc checked
7. Select "Sensors Only"
8. Click Continue if you get a pop iup asking if ya want anything disabled
9. Scroll down to the 3rd section and you will see thermometer icons with Core 0, Core 1, Core 2, etc
10 These have Current, Minimum, Maximum and Average columns ... you highest of the 6 Core Temps in the Maximum column is the one ya want.

If MSI AB is accurate, and I'm reading it right, 60C is no concern.

Right, the Max on MSI AB is the highest temp it got when running the test. I'll try the Hwinfo again when I return home today. I got stuck after I ran the program.

Well, apparently it was a network issue. I reset my PC's network settings and also factory reset my modem/router. No more issues. :D
Thanks for the help, and also for the pointers.
