According to the Nvidia website you can use SLI with two or more different brands of graphics cards as long as they have the same GPU.
Apparently 'An EVGA GTX480 FTW Edition is simply a GTX480 in terms of SLI'

I would like to make sure that I would be able to use an MSI GTX 980 4GB and an EVGA GTX 980 4GB in SLI.

I currently have an MSI Z97-G55 (SLI capable motherboard) and an MSI GTX 980.

Thanks in advance :)

As long as they are the exact same GPU chpset then the particular vendor makes no difference. Just be sure to use the nVidia drivers for both cards versus the ones provided by each vendor or your cards will fight each other.
