So my brother has been having issues with his computer that I built about a year and a half ago. It first started off with the computer shutting off randomly during usage, it would sometimes shut off after an hour, sometimes it would only last 5 minutes. Now we're to the point where the computer shuts off just a few seconds after being powered on. After leaving the computer unplugged for a few days, he was able to use it again for about a week, but now the issue is back where the computer shuts off just after a few seconds of being powered on. At first I thought this was a PSU issue, but after doing some research I believe the problem is related to the CPU or the CPU cooler.

When the computer shuts off, the CPU light on the MOBO flashes once with a red light. Another thing I noticed when I was able to get into the BIOS is that the CPU fan is spinning at 9000RPM, which is obviously not normal. Is it possible that the CPU cooler is bad? Could it be the processor itself? Does anyone have any recommendations or ideas as to what could be causing this issue?

Here are the parts I used to build the computer:
- CORSAIR Hydro Series H55 Quiet Edition Water / Liquid CPU Cooler. 120mm
- ASUS SABERTOOTH 990FX R2.0 Motherboard
- AMD FX-4300 Vishera Quad-Core 3.8GHz (4.0GHz) Socket AM3+ 95W
- CORSAIR HX Series HX850 850W
- G.SKILL Sniper Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1866 (PC3 14900)
- EVGA GTX 770 SuperClocked 2GB
- SAMSUNG 840 Pro Series SSD
- Seagate Barracuda 1TB 7200RPM

Any recommendations or tips would be greatly appreciated.

Solution
Your symptoms sound like your CPU is overheating due to a bad or faulty cooler. Try this, take the liquid cooler off and install the stock fan that came with your cpu and see if the computer starts and runs normally. Make sure to clean off any old thermal paste before installing the stock cooler.
