The GTX750 TI supposedly supports 4k display at 60hz refresh rate. Is this true?

According to this article:

http://www.tomshardware.com/news/nvidia-kepler-4k-hdmi-1.4,27117.html

it seems that the GeForce 340.43 Beta driver release had made it possible to push 4K at 60 Hz out of Kepler based cards, despite not having the HDMI 2.0 interface

It "seems" as though the technology would allow it, but as a user of this card I cannot pull it off. I downloaded the driver that the article points to (and the driver download page DOES list this specific card under "Supported Products") and began my search through forums, documentation, and the nVidia control panel itself. But I was unable to find any way to modify the chroma subsampling. I thought perhaps it is something that would automatically take place, but this is not the case. If I switch to a 4k resolution, connecting this card to my monitor with a high speed hdmi cable, I only ever see a 30hz refresh rate.

This card has gained some popularity due to recent sales (around $99) and being posted multiple times on slickdeals, and I believe that it is important to determine whether or not this card is cable of 4k gaming (even at the cost of reduced color quality). I have been directed to the aforementioned article on multiple occasions, but never any proof or method of this being an actual capability.

I appreciate any help/knowledge that you guys can drop on me.909=-=6

Solution
The HDMI 1.4 interface is limited to 4k at 30fps so the only way you can output 60fps 4k is via a displayport so if your card has it then it should be fine.

I appreciate your responses. But the article specifically states (see the quote in my original post) that nVidia has found a workaround to the limitations of HDMI 1.4 by essentially lowering the color quality (modifying the chroma subsampling, specifically, the article explains).

This graphics card does not have a display port, otherwise that is the route I would go.

I am questioning the validity of the article, as I have been unable to find any other sources to back this up, and have been unable to replicate this in my own testing.

You are right - nothing is mentioned about this on NVIDIA's website but other places are saying it's possible. Maybe have a go with a different HDMI cable or monitor if you have one?

I have made sure that I am using a high speed hmdi cable and a very capable monitor:

I am starting to think that the capability mentioned in the article may not be as supported as I have been lead to believe, or maybe there is some unexposed trick to turning this feature on/off.

I would imagine that maybe some settings or something have to be activated for it to work since its a special work around that Nvidia created.... now it says " beta drivers" in your link... are the final drivers out ?

The other thing to note, is that none of the other sites covering the release of this these drivers mentions this capability. Not sure where Tom's Hardware got their info on it.

That sounds reasonable. Though it means that the article is just incorrect because it claims it is made possible through the Beta drivers. I guess the author does say "it seems," so maybe that's enough to cover his ass, ha.

Well, this just in. I noticed a "Source" link at the top of the article pointing to the "Official NVIDIA 340.43 BETA Game Ready Display Driver Feedback Thread (6/17/14)":

https://forums.geforce.com/default/topic/753944/geforce-drivers/official-nvidia-340-43-beta-game-ready-display-driver-feedback-thread-6-17-14-/post/4245376/#4245376

The second post states: The BETA driver exposes 4K 60Hz YUV420 over HDMI for Kepler GPUs running Windows 7 or above (may need to update firmware of your 4K HDTV if your model does not support YUV420 over HDMI).

According to this, only certain devices will support YUV420 of HDMI, so perhaps that is my issue. I will dig deeper into the specs behind my monitor to see if any information is available on whether or not it would support this.

Sounds good - keep us updated as I am intrigued :)

Some interesting thoughts in this thread:

http://www.avsforum.com/forum/26-home-theater-computers/1572386-reports-4k-60p-over-hdmi-using-nvidia-gpus.html

One that stands out is "For this to work, you need a 4KTV with a HDMI Rx chip that supports 18 Gbps HDMI signals." I thought that 18Gbps was a measurement related to HDMI 2.0, though from what I've read the whole point of this was that it circumvents the need for HDMI 2.0. At any rate, I was unable to determine any difference between the HMDI-in on my monitor in comparison to the other monitors/tvs that claim to have run 4k with a 60hz refresh rate. My brain is a little numb so I posted in that thread and I'm going to try and not think about it for a little bit and hope someone replies. Follow-up to come later.

OK, great. I've actually been holding off on 4K due to issues like this - it should be interesting as to what the solution is.

Well, I don't like it, but after more research and more discussion in other forums, the answer seems to be "some monitors will accept this workaround and some won't." I cannot come up with any technical answer as to why it would work for some people and not for others, but the monitor/tv in use seems to be the main variable.

So, that being said, I think that the safest route is to just assume this workaround will not work on your monitor. Go for a gpu with HDMI 2.0 or DisplayPort and you'll be safe. As for the monitor/TV, I am still not sure what sets them apart (are there HDMI 2.0 in ports vs 1.4 0 in?), so I'd be sure that the monitor has a DisplayPort in as well (luckily mine does, so all I need to do now is upgrade my graphics card).

Thanks for all the responses.
