external hard drive read only

I have an external hard drive (WD Element desktop) that I've been using w/ a laptop. I'm now using a new Windows 8 computer and am not able to access my pictures file from the ext. hard drive. I get an error message that I don't have proper permissions to view the files. I've tried multiple viewer programs, changed the permissions to ALL and still can't access. The folder is showing as read only and I change it but it still reverts back to read only. I store all my photos for my business on this hard drive so I'm desperate. Please help.

Hey Cyndi. I'm sorry to hear you're having such an issue with your drive. Can you right on the drive and select properties. Then select the security tab. Would you please paste a screenshot with the permissions shown there? (imgur.com should do the job for the image upload). Other than that, is it still working fine with the laptop and have you tried any encrypting software on the drive?

Thanks but it's thousands of images. I really don't want to have to do that. But if that's what it comes down to, I might have to.

miraculously the problem has righted itself. I don't know what changed but I'm immediately saving these photos to the cloud! Thanks for your suggestions.
