Trying to Salvage a Build Gone Wrong

TL;DR: Errors in building may have compromised the integrity of the components of this build. No beeps codes to help troubleshoot issue. Computer is currently breadboarded.

Had a friend's son try to perform his first build using videos he found online. Unfortunately, he's endeavors did not go as well as planned.

His build (quick link):
CPU: AMD Athlon X4 860k 3.7GHz Quad-Core Processor
CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 Plus 76.8CFM Sleeve Bearing CPU Cooler
Mobo: MSI A78M-E45 Micro ATX FM2+ Motherboard
Mem1: Crucial Ballistix 4GB (1x4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory
Mem2: Patriot Viper Xtreme 4GB (1x4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory
HD: Seagate Barracuda 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive
Video: PowerColor Radeon R9 280 3GB TurboDuo Video Card
CaseThermaltake Chaser A31 Snow White ATX Mid Tower Case
PS: Antex 450W ATX Power Supply
Optical: Lie-On iHAS124-14 DVD/CD Writer

The first mistake he made was with the CPU. He didn't set the CPU properly and bent the pins. They discarded the bent pin CPU and purchased another.

After putting everything back together, they still couldn't get power to the board.

When I arrived at the build, I started by removing the case jumpers and re-installing them correctly. He had one stick of RAM installed in DIMM3, I moved it to DIMM1 (not sure if it was needed or not). Couldn't see any other issues.

Connected the power, and hit the switch. The fans turned, the hard drive and optical drive both did their boot, but no video, no BIOS.

I hooked up the mother board speaker to see if there were any beep codes, but it was completely silent (aside form the fans), no beeps. I tried another mobo speaker just in case, but still nothing.

Getting desperate, I started my Google search and landed at the an old friend, Tom's Hardware. I found a post on how to breadboard and tried that.

I'm at a loss. I've taken the entire computer apart, and haven't been able to get any beeps.

Things I noticed:

  • The case jumpers weren't set up correctly.
The motherboard power ATX power connectors (pins 11,12,23, and 24) weren't seated properly.
The CPU fan mount wasn't secured properly.
The CPU base ended up with scratches and thermal grease in the holes.
Any help determining what needs to be done to troubleshoot further would be much appreciated.

no, sounds to me like the CPU socket itself was probably damaged from whatever caused the "bent pins" of the first CPU. check to make sure (visibly) that the pins are not bent on the motherboard as well (and as a result, the replacement CPU). an insignificant PSU would more likely be inconsistent, but would at least show signs of life. and if it was a ram issue, you'd get beeps most likely

Are you dead sure this isn't a bios compatibilty with the 860k.
A lot of fm2+ boards unfortunately ship with an old bios that doesn't support the 860k,if it oldish stock this may be the problem.
That particular board requires bios 25.3 as a minimum.
Is there a sticker/label on the board anywhere with the board & bios revision printed??
If not it may well be on bios 25.0 which is incompatible.

I'm currently not using the video card. I wanted to start with the basics and get the beep codes. Should I try plugging in a video card or trying to run it without?

I wasn't able to find the BIOS version on the motherboard. However, MSI's website does say it's compatible with the CPU. I was going to contact MSI to see what version of the BIOS the motherboard was shipped with.

I don't think that integrated video is provided with this particular CPU and motherboard combo. The FM2+ socket system gets it integrated video from APUs, this CPU does not contain integrated video. It could explain why nothing shows on the display and the behavior being demonstrated.

So, you need to install a video card to get the system to do much of anything.

Interesting. I was wondering about that. If I don't have a GPU installed, will I get the beep codes?

I installed a ATI Radeon X850PRO and still wasn't able to get any beep codes or video.

At this point, I'm strongly leaning toward the motherboard being bad. Thoughts?

Possibly, assuming you have an on-board or connected motherboard speaker. Not all mobos have them.

My quick glance at the pictures on the MSI website does NOT show a built-in speaker. There are 2 pins on the motherboard that a speaker can be connected to (just refer to the manual).

I've connected the speaker to the respective jumpers. :-(

The motherboard ended up being the problem. I purchased a new motherboard, hooked everything up, and it's working again.

Somewhere along...

  • ... not seating the CPU properly,
... not connecting the power cables to the motherboard properly,
... getting thermal grease in the socket pin holes,
... and hearing a "static shock" sound,
... the motherboard went bad.

Thank you everyone for your responses. I really appreciated the input to help me narrow down the issue.
