Hi there,

ive just got a new mobo (msi Z97 Gaming 3)
ive noticed that the board requires 12v 8 pin atx whereas my psu only has a 4pin.
Would it be possible to use a molex to 4pin adapter in conjunction with the existing 4pin to power the board safely?

Solution
I dont recommend using a 4 pin adapter to begin with, let alone in conjunction with a second 4 pin EPS.
To my knowledge the 8 pin connector is not two 4 pins put together anyway.

That being said, you can simply use 4 pins, so long as you do not overclock. (Plug the 4 pins into one half of the 8)

Well, if it says you can in the manual, it can't hurt anything by just being a 4 pin and not an 8. You'd be perfectly safe to try it.

The manual just says ATX power supply and doesen't specify an EPS as mandatory, so you should be fine. It'd be their fault for not complying with specs anyhow; that would mean that if the 4 pin caused probs, so would the 8 pin.

Yah, i read the manual and edited my comment as you posted, it is perfectly safe to go with Gam3r01 on this. This was very common when 8 pin sockets first came out; lots of ppl still had 4 pin power supplys at the time. If it makes you feel better just check the pin voltages listed in the manual and check out the ATX 4 pin spec and the specs for your power supply. You'll see that all the 12v, 5, and ground match up. The connector wont plug in if rotated wrong due to the corners being keyed. you'll be okay.
