Hey everyone! I built my PC about a month ago and after a few weeks I decided to overclock the processor. I got it stable to 4.4Ghz at 1.3V I think. When I managed to get hold of some thermal paste, some thermal compound remover and purifier and some wipes, I removed the current thermal paste on my CPU and replaced it. I also opened up my GPU and replaced the thermal paste on that too as the GPU has been previously used in a mining rig and I didn't like the temps all that much. Anyway, I booted onto desktop, temps were much better getting 20'c idle (before was 30-40'c) and 50-60'c load (before was 60-70'c) and the GPU was the best improvement getting 50-60'c at full load on 25% fan speed (before was 70-90'c at 75-90% fan speed). After running a few games to test out the temperatures, I decided to overclock a little further.

In the BIOS I first tried to 4.8Ghz at 1.4V. Of course, it didn't work so I put up the voltage further and further until I didn't like how high it was (1.45V, I kept getting WHEA_uncorrectable_error and machine_check_exception error). So I reduced the clock speed to 4.6Ghz (1.4V) and booted to desktop. I didn't get any errors and games ran fine up to a point where my computer would again display machine_check_exception error and restart. I then put back the clock to 4.5GHz (1.4V) and that seemed stable all until now. I could run games fine and accepted that my CPU could only OC to 4.5, which is a massive overclock anyway so I wasn't complaining.

Now when I try to compress a video I rendered out last night in Handbrake (video is 1080p, 60fps, 50KBS) it will probably get to 25% done and I will then get the error machine_check_exception. Is it because my voltage is too high? My temps are above as stated. My PC has been on for a few days now, do you think that is why? It's stable in all things except handbrake it seems. I would've thought rendering would've been more intensive. Thanks for the help as I have done a little research and found that these can be hard to diagnose. Pretty sure it's not a problem with my GPU, motherboard, HDD, temps or RAM. My motherboard has an on board troubleshooter where it will turn on a light situated at the point where there's a problem with that certain component.

Any help is much appreciated!

Specs:
Intel Pentium G3258 (OC to 4.5Ghz, 1.4V)
MSI R9 280X Twin Frozr
8GB HyperX Fury Series 1866Mhz RAM (2x4GB, dual channel)
Asus Sabertooth Z97 Mark 2
EVGA Supernova 750W G2
Seagate Barracuda 500GB 7200RPM
Windows 8.1
NZXT H440

Solution
First thing to do is set it all to stock and try the program again. If that does not give you errors it's the overclock. Drop it down to when it was stable before.

Try disconnecting your CD/DVD/Blu Ray drive from the SATA cable. I had this same issue and doing that allowed Windows 10 to install. Don't know why as I think it's a little silly that a drive could cause the issue.

Thanks for the help guys but it turned out it was the one video file... somehow. I don't know why it only crashed with that one file but every other file I tried to compress did it fine (all same settings and also video was longer, about 30 minutes in length). Either way, this CPU has served me well and still remains stable at 4.5 today. I'm upgrading my CPU today to an i7 5820k and trying out the overclocking on that, I've heard it was pretty good at it.

Thanks again.
