Lost my laptop in the move, but finally found it.
DELL Inspiron 15 (N5050)
Wondering what can I upgrade on this laptop to be kickass.
Willing to spend around $700 total, and I'm not going to purchase a new laptop.

Solution
Why would you spend as much as the purchase price on "upgrading" the laptop? In any event there are probably no sensible upgrades beyond a faster HDD (SSD) or a RAM upgrade if the machine needs it.

The upgrades wouldn't even help out, all you can do to upgrade your laptop is swap out RAM and HDD for something faster. I would recommend getting a new laptop.

See http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/laptop/f/3518/t/19595042 for an i5-2540M upgrade which has been working fine for 6 months now- cost c$150 all in (CPU ($70), 8GB RAM ($65), new keyboard ($15)). Aids:

1) Clean out fan good- that means unscrew/pull fan off mount because the junction between metal heat dissipator bars and fan itself gets clogged over time. It's not immediately obvious until you separate the 2 that this is where dust++ has built up. I have pictures if you need them.
2) I used Arctic Silver on CPU.
3) A cooling pad helps (say http://www.ebay.com/itm/360979330377?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT for c$8). Pass-thru USB port too.

Qs just ask here or there- happy to help. But it works good.
