Hi all, having trouble overclocking the above processor. When I say having trouble I mean I can't even overclock to 4ghz. If I make any change at all to cpu speed my pc will just restart itself. I've followed a few guides and tried the asus ai suite and it will boot up be alright for a little while (matter of minutes) and restart. Same with 4.1, 4.2ghz and anything higher it won't boot at all giving a bsod saying some code with error. The main specs are

I7 4770k
Asus hero
Hydro h80i
16gb Teamgroup lv 2400mhz

All my parts are roughly over 7 months used I've just left it with all stock atm because I got annoyed with the lack of overclock.

Any help on where to start checking to see what's wrong? I know oc is like a lottery but to not be able to do any at all can't be right

I do have another bug though, the recommended slots for my ram are a1, b1. When my sticks are in these slots the pc won't boot and I get asus motherboard error memory not installed. It did boot once in that configuration but only showed 1 stick. I've tried various cconfigurations and it only works in a1,a2, showing both both sticks at the 2400mhz speed.

Is this a faulty motherboard? Which won't allow me to overclock? Is it a ram issue? I've done the on board memory test and all was fine and I did a mem test which went on for a few hours showing no issues either

A cheap PSU affects the overclock. Very few times the components mainly cpu gets damaged but most times the overclock doesn't get a stable path and gives BSOD.
The PSU that you have given is of the gaming series. And the PSU that I suggested is average but gold Certified. Here is one of gaming series:

For sli of two 980s you will need a 850W PSU, her is a one:

These are really really good PSUs, if you can get it, then must get it, it is highly recommended. :)

No buddy, motherboard is not faulty, just you need to know some things. You have to put the both sticks to A1 and A2 or B1 and B2. Because it will enable the dual channel memory mode. It is dual channel configuration. If you put sticks in A1 and B1 or either it will give you error. Now about overclocking.
You have to do overclocking in bios because it needs less voltage, higher oc and if also increase the processor life comparable to oc by software. Also If you get Any manual settings and of you go for that then the oc will be unstable and will produce more heat. That's why you are getting a unstable oc. Now clear your CMOS to reset all settings to factory and start overclocking from factory settings. Just follow this Steps:
1) just enable your XMP memory profile if your memory support that.
2) increase the cpu ratio from factory settings a little(whichever smallest possible) and boot in your os.
3) Download cpu stress testing software prime95 and do a stress test around 20 minutes.
4) if it passes then restart and go in bios, increase a little cpu ratio again a little bit.
5) if it passes then repeat 4th method. And if it not passes then go in bios and increase the CPU voltage and again test. Just keep doing that.
6) a time will arrive when the temp will gone so high, at that time you have to stop and keep it to cool.
7) also when doing upper methods you have to keep a eye on your temps.
8) a step will arrive when prime95 will never pass or the temp will gone so high immediately when stress test started, that point you have to stop and you get the unleashed speed of your processor. You got a stable oc now.

hello thanks for the responce. i tried that step by step and my pc still crashed after about 10-15min into prime95, the voltage had to get increased quite alot and tempts started going into 90c ish range. all same bsod saying some error :/

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-563-AS thats the motherboard

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-011-TG thats the ram

ive been using all stock settings but on the ram i use the xmp profile.

I still think its a ram issue due to the error i get on the blue screen, next time it does it i'll have to quickly take note. the ram was second hand so im not sure of how well they are tbh but only time my pc hangs up or anything is on a OC

on a 4.2 overclock atm though and playing through wow with temps at 46c so far so good, if i was to use prime95 though im sure itll bsod on me

Oh!!!! Power Supply was the main problem. Now just reset your all settings to factory by clearing the CMOS IMMEDIATELY. Corsair cx cs and vs series are budget PSUs series and contains poor Chinese capacitors which is totally bad for overclocking. You MUST have to switch your PSU to Seasonic, EVGA or xfx. What's your budget?
