So I've been playing Farcry 3 on max settings and this is around the temperature i usually have. Is this temperature safe? Now it does fluctuate a degree or 2 at the most but I've seen it go as far as 67-68 degrees when i'm either running Skype or when i have another windows pulled up. Below is a picture that i took of the CPU temp along with a bunch of other things from the stock app that came with my motherboard.

PS. I am going to be wiping the stock thermal paste off and applying some Arctic Silver 5 here soon so that may or may not bring the temperature down a little bit more.

Thank you,

Cedric DuVal

that is probably why you are so hot. snoop around your motherboard settings and see if you can find anything that says "turbo" or anything related to the CPu frequency that is not set at default.

some motherboards come preset with an overclock that pushes your chip for more speed. currently your CPU is being pushed 10% beyond its stock settings. Normally your chip can handle this frequency with no problem but your cooler was not designed to handle the extra heat. If you can find where the Motherboard is ramping up the speed and turn it back down to 4Ghz then you should see your temps go back to normal.

those temps are fairly high for an i7. Do you have it over clocked at all? The stock coolers dont really hold up to overclocking very well. replacing the thermal paste will help ever so slightly but a new cooler will go a lot further. If your case is big enough you could try a Cooler master hyper 212. I have several of them and they work like champs. I currently have one on this rig which is an FX8320 overclocked to 4Ghz. It runs MUCH hotter then the i7 and yet this system idles at 32c and has never gone over 50c.

i dont know anything about overclocking at all. its a 4.0 GHz Processor but my cpu frequency runs at 4400 MHz. im not sure if that converts to 4.4 Ghz but thats max frequency it runs at. and im not sure how to turn it down

Yeah im the biggest idiot ever. Went into Bios and the first thing i saw was Turbo Boost Technology. Turned that off and everything is running significantly cooler. Thank you for all the help! im looking at high 40's to low 50's now

Glad I could help. 40s Idle and 50s under load is what you want. If you ever want to take advantage of that extra speed that your chip is capable of, all you need is an after market cooler like the one I listed. just make sure your case can fit it because those things are very large.
