So I have a router but it's shared with the family so it stays in the family room. I want a wired connection for my new computer but it's too far away. Can I just buy another router and keep it in my room to use on my own? What exactly would I need to do this

Solution

Can you use the ceiling? Or put the cable under the carpet/floor?
A cable will usually be faster in response time compared to wifi, but if wifi is your only option you can consider a wifi signal extender/booster to put between your room and the router, accompanied by a good quality wifi card for your pc.

Also if you want to be a bit evil configure the router to prioritize your traffic above others.

The only issue is that the original router is too far away from my room I would have to run a cable through my whole house which my parents would not likely appreciate

You can get another router, but if it is going to connect to the same router through wifi you will not gain any speed, you might even experience some loss of speed because of the extra router in between your pc and the 'first' router.

You don't state how far away the router is from your room, but a regular cat5 ethernet cable can be made up to 250 feet without signal loss.

Well...what type of connection are you looking for?
A direct Cat5e cable (as you alluded to in the initial comment)?
Or something else?

It's probably about 50 feet away but running the wire through my halls and into the other room isn't really an option. I would have to drill holes in my walls and run the wire through them that way

I want a wired connection but from what you guys are telling me I gather that the only way to have that is to run a wire to my main router because having a second one would only reduce speeds

If you're thinking of connecting another router to the telephone (or cable) line, that's not possible. You've already ruled out an ethernet link and wireless is what you already have. So, that's all your choices.

Using another 'router' or other Access Point will be significantly slower than a direct wire to the router.

Speed + reliability, descending:
Wired ethernet
MOCA
Powerline
WiFI

Just thought of another option - powerline adapters. As long as your mains cabling isn't too noisy it's worth considering. Success rates vary, so it would be best if you could get some on a sale or return basis. (Easy in the UK as you have the right to return anything bought on the Internet, within a certain period, without having to have a special reason.)
