Current system:

CPU: i7 975
RAM: 24GB
HD: SSD
Video: GTX 780
OS: Win 8.1 Pro
PSU: 800w

I would like to add a better CPU, and a gtx 980.

Do I need to buy another mobo+ ram ? Which one?

Seems that an Intel Core i7-990X Extreme Edition 3.46 GHz could give some life to my system (10%-30%) What do you think ?

Have you tried to overclock the 975 at all? back in its hey day I took my 950 up to 4.8ghz on water.

Your ram will be fine up to socket 1150 but if your wanting to switch over to the newer ddr4 you will have to get a socket 2011-v3

So I would look at upgrading the MB to at least a socket 1150 and a i5 4690k. Then if you want you can upgrade the 780 to a 980. Your ram which im guessing is 6x4gb will be downgrade to 4x4gb which is still fine for gaming.

Unless your getting the 990x dirt cheap as in like free or under $50 I wouldn't bother with it and just do a full system refresh.

yep, LGA 1366.

I overcloked it at 3.7ghz just for testing but didn't see any improvement with Elite Dangerous and Oculus.
