System: i5-3570k, msi gaming gtx 970

i've noticed that when playing dota 2 my gpu usage never or very rarely goes above 20-30% usage. my framerate is usually pretty stable but there have been times where it drops to around 60 and the gpu usage barely increases to try to account for it. sometimes it doesnt seem to react at all. it's not that important seeing as my fps is not suffering but aren't games supposed to utilize as much of your gpu as possible?

Solution
Yeah, DOTA 2 was built with very light requirements to allow for the widest player base possible. Sure your GTX 970 could probably pump out like 200+ FPS on it but what's the point of that?

I also use a GTX 970 and I basically always use VSYNC to limit the FPS to 60. That's the highest rate my display can actually show and I don't see the point of running my hardware at 100% to put out 200fps on lighter games.

I don't know much about computer hardware but I assume that I'm better off letting my stuff run at 40% usage when that's all that is needed. I don't hesitate to push it to 100% for games that can take advantage of it but why put the extra strain on your system for games designed for light hardware?

The problem is dota 2, it isn't optimized, there have been too many complaints from people with high end GPUs nvidia and amd alike..huge fps drops especially on big team fights, will drop to 20-40fps. Only thing to do is wait for valve to fix it

it depends on your current setting.

according to this - http://www.gamingpcbuilder.com/dota-2-reborn-hardware-performance-benchmark/3/

"The game utilizes the full processing power of the AMD R9 270 when set to Preset 3 and 4. With all settings at low and off, together with Preset 1, it only utilizes 32% 34% of the GPU, while Preset 2 and our custom preset stays at the middle with 55% and 65% utilization. This shows that DOTA 2 Reborn (Source 2 engine) is GPU dependent, meaning it can use all the processing power of the video when all settings are turned on."

Dota 2 is more cpu than gpu intensive game. Uses high percent of cpu,80% in mine case, but low gpu usage. If you have faster gpu than cpu,it will be like 20-50% gpu usage, cpu will bottleneck. So,it's a good idea to overclock your cpu and get maximum from it. Or simpy buy a faster cpu so it can follow your gpu speeds. Than your gpu usage will be higher. But the fact is that Dota 7.00 is NOT well optimized game. Not at all. But Source 2 as the game engine is biggest mistake i think.
