I ordered a Transcend SSD370 256gb that I want to put in my Dell Inspriron 17R SE laptop (17.3", i7-3630QM, 8gb, 1tb hd, NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M). It should arrive tomorrow. My plan is to use the Transcend SSD Scope software to clone Win8.1 + all my programs to it and leave my data on the 1tb hd. I expected to do the clone by installing the SSD into the empty secondary drive bay, do the clone, then move the SSD to the primary drive bay, and put the 1tb hd in the secondary drive bay. Today I was reading the SSD Scope pdf manual on the Transcend website (http://www.transcend-info.com/files/special/SSD_Scope_Manual_v2.3_EN.pdf) and it says that in order to do the clone I must use a USB-to-SATA cable or adapter. The SSD370 does not include one. Is this for real that I can't just put the SSD370 in the empty drive bay to do the clone?

I installed my new SSD370 in the empty bay, but I am having a problem. :-( Win8.1 is the only OS. I logged on as an admin user and ran SSD Scope 2.6. The DRIVE tab shows that the SSD370 is installed. I selected System Clone and it shows at the top D:\2.0GB 500.0MB 128.0MB; C:\921.4GB 451.0MB; Y:\6.6GB. I think D: is the Dell recovery partition. I have no idea what the Y: drive is. I don't have a Y: drive and I have no external drives attached to my computer. I only have the original 1tb HDD plus the new SSD370.

I want to clone only Win8.1 OS to the SSD370. I went to the Destination drop down menu and the only choice is \Device\Harddisk1 (entire disk) so I selected it. I immediately got an error window that says "Destination disk size must be larger than OS partition!" I clicked OK and then checked Clone OS partition only, but now the Destination has been cleared. I tried it again and the same thing. I can't get this to work. I have a screenshot. Any ideas? Thank you.

I've never actually used that software, so its hard for me to say. Possibly there is too much data on the partition for it to be resized as small as needed to fit on the SSD.

Perhaps you should just use Paragon SSD migration tool. It costs a few bucks, but it will allow you to actually choose what files to include and exclude. And I know it handles all the partitioning stuff just fine.

DataMedic, thank you again for your reply. Your answer made me realize something that I didn't before. I had bought the 256gb SSD with the intention of only putting Win8.1, my installed programs (Lightroom, Photoshop, etc.), and my Lightroom catalog on it and then using the 1tb HDD as my data disk where I would keep my photo files (currently about 675gb) that are imported into Lightroom and other data.

I read about the SSD Scope software before buying and I naively thought when they said their software could clone my OS that I was all set. Now I realize that what they meant is that it would clone my OS partition which is a very important distinction. A good example of a little knowledge being a dangerous thing. Well, my OS partition is, I suppose, my whole C: drive which is 921gb and I am using 809gb of it (for Win8.1 + programs + data). The SSD Scope software when it says it will clone my OS really is saying it will clone the OS partition which is currently 809gb. Okay, now I understand better. Sigh.:)

So, if I am understanding things correctly now I have the choice of using Paragon to pick and choose what I want to clone or temporarily remove the 675gb of photo files from C: (of course, they are backed up on a couple of USB 3 external hdds) and then doing the clone using SSD Scope.

I read on the Paragon website:

http://

The section headed Challenge 2. 64-bit Windows migration configured to the uEFI boot mode is something else I didn't know about and it has me wondering if the SSD Scope software handles this?
