Hello I am wondering what the best way to clean thermal compound off of a CPU. I have heard that coffee filters work great but I do not have any so what would be a good alternative?

use TIM remover and a lint free cloth or isopropyl alcohol (99%+ pure) and a lint free cloth...

if you have neither then wipe the paste off as best you can with dense paper such as writing paper or cigarette papers (not toilet roll or anything as loosely bound) and while its not recommended it will make the surface clean enough to apply the new paste

What would you recommend? Can I still use the 92% isopropyl alcohol and then just wipe the CPU with a dry part of the microfiber cloth to get the residue?

90% pure is the bare minimum purity thats recommended for the use of removing TIM but there purer you can get it the better.
so yeah you can use it (i wouldnt but thats just me as i can get the 99.1% pure stuff from my chemists) as long as it has no perfume or colourants then it should be ok.

Ok thanks because I am getting a new CPU and new motherboard so I was just going to clean the thermal past off the old cpu and leave it in the motherboard and put it in an antistatic bag. But anyway thanks for the help!
