So I bought my dad a new laptop several months ago because unfortunetly his old one gave out... sadly this one came with Windows 8.1 it was working somewhat decent when we first got it but now its barely functional.

When you go to Control Panel > System and Security > System
it says the processor and RAM are not available...
WIndows updates don't work (this hasn't worked since day 1) when you try to do a Windows update it just freezes or says "Update failed, reverting changes" or something along those lines.

Can't get most programs to install... I can't get programs like Steam to work....

its an Acer Aspire M5-583P-5859
the computer seems to be clean of any viruses, Avast nor Malwarebytes can find anything... I'm completely lost here.. Windows 7 has always worked perfect for me so I'm out of my field.....

Solution
I had the same problems with my lap top after I let my friend use it with expired Antivirus, however, no spyware was detected by Webroor, Malware Bytes and Norton.

This is how I partially fixed it: when updates freeze, go to the update history and see if it freezes on some particular update. Sometime it would attempt to install wrong or duplicate update and it will fail. My was stock on Windows Live. It would open little window, saying I already have it installed, but teh Window hides behind other windows and I did not see it. If you identify update that causes failure, exclude it from Download list.

Go to your services. (Task Manager- Ctrl/Alt/Delete) and click on services. Look for any services that have anything to do with Windows...

Go to your services. (Task Manager- Ctrl/Alt/Delete) and click on services. Look for any services that have anything to do with Windows update or installation. Start all services that may resemble what you need. Also I see "Windows Installer" stopped on my computer and I still can run updates. I dont remember which service it was but without it, Windows can not run updates or install.

Install Webroot or Malware Byte (they have free version) and run several scans. Viruses often block installation of security updates. Keep trying- this issue is fixable.

Try to enable Windows Defender. If the access to it blocked, you have a virus.
