So quite a while ago, maybe around june 2014 i dropped my WD My book 2tb and since then it doesn't work, meaning its extremely slow. It shows up on my desktop fine and as normal, but when i open it, it is extremely slow, maybe it will show a folder in about 1 hour, I have transferred all of my IMPORTANT files off but i have some other non-important, entertainment stuff on there. Is there anything i can do with this drive to get it working again? Is it completely dead or can i repurpose it for something? Thanks.

BTW moving a 2 gb file took about 5 hours.

Hi there WafflePi,

Unfortunately, you will have to get the other stuff the same slow way. After that(and as you have backed up all your data), you can try taking the drive out of the enclosure. In case it doesn't have a proprietary connector, you should be able to connect it to SATA(yes, it will be good if you try this on a SATA connection) and try to refomat it. If it works, you can try to put it in a third party enclosure. Keep in mind that all of this may work if the enclosure is damaged not the HDD itself. Also, do not take the drive out of the enclosure before you get the data as it is hardware encrypted.

Hope this will help,

Check the drives status : http://crystalmark.info/software/CrystalDiskInfo/index-...

And RUN CHKDSK /f/r from CMD, it will scan the surface of the drive, and will repair any file system errors.

But if there is a mechanical fault then there's nothing can be done.
