So I bought some gaming equipment that was never used off a friend for next to nothing and while I am not really into gaming I thought I would build a nice computer that would make use of these items. The desktop computer I have now is like a 10 year old HP Media Center with a Pentium D and 1gb of ram. While its not a dinosaur, it is super slow when trying to run multiple programs. So Ideally I would like to build an up to-dateish computer that will be able to use the video card I have but is mainly for running say Fire fox, I tunes, dvd fab, etc at once and not constantly freeze up. My wife burns allot of CD's and DVD's.

Here is what I have:

-Corsair carbide series 300r windowed series
-ASUS geforce GTX 660Ti
-LSP Ultra ATX power supply model number: AD-5620N2-36 (700w peak power 600 total power)
-WD Caviar Green 1TB SATA hard drive (model: WDBAAY0010HNC-NRSN

I know the GTX660 is probably way way more than I will need or use and thought about possibly trading it for stuff I can use (mother board, cpu, ram etc) But that's just a thought

So I know I need:

1. Mother board What is a good MB that has room to upgrade if I choose later down the line and will last. Ive read reviews that some use cheap capacitors that eventually go out, or just cheap parts in general so I would like to stay away from these if at all possible.

2. CPU + heat sink I'm not partial to but have always had computers with Intel CUP's and kind of lean towards Intel vs AMD. But I have never used AMD, so again I don't know whats best. I have an i5 in my gateway laptop currently so I was thinking maybe the i7? And what ever CPU I get, what type or kind of heat sink will I need? And I don't think I will be overclocking as I don't really understand what it is or does or if I need it.

3. RAM Again my laptop has 8gb which is the most ive had on a computer and it does real well running multiple programs. Maybe 16gb? And what do I go with, registered, non, ECC? I don't know whats what

4. Monitor My monitor now is the one that came with the HP media center with the blue screw on connector which im sure wont work with the ASUS. I'm not looking for something huge, just reasonable.

5. OS I have a win7 ultimate on my 1TB HD but Microsoft says its an OEM version which makes no sense to me because this hard drive I got from my friend in this package deal (which was the only thing that he used) which has win 7 installed on it. The hard drive came in its original box so its not like it was installed in an OEM system by manufacture. I used the product key finder software with the HD plugged in my desktop computer and found the win 7 ultimate product key but when I entered it in the software recovery site I got an error message and called Microsoft to figure out why and they tell me its an oem key and not retail. Which really sucks because I don't want to spend another 200 bucks for a stupid product key when I have one right here. Ive done some research on using oem keys and some say they have done so many times and others say no way, so Ill see when it comes time to load the OS. I was hoping with a new board and using this hard drive that has win 7 OS that I would maybe get lucky with using the OEM key attached to that hard drive for authorization. If anyone has a suggestion on what to do with this, I would really like to know.

6. DVD drive I have a fairly new light scribe DVD drive that works ok, but what brand/model would you recommend for fast burning speed and longevity? I know there are a ton out there and I will need to know what cable I am hooking it up with, which maybe someone could suggest if there is a better way or faster speed then the standard ribbon cable.

Am I missing anything else?

As far as price goes, I don't really have a set budget but I am not looking to go all out on this so if you could, please take that in consideration. Maybe if someone could list the Ideal setup and maybe an economical setup? I just want to build a decent computer and while I am not cheap or want cheap parts, I also don't mine buying last years model or something alike that is still awesome but just not what is bad a$$ at the very date. I kind of thought maybe I could find a used MB setup with the ram and predecessor/heat sink or something alike to make things easier and a little less expensive but I highly doubt it.

Any and all input is welcome. And if you are interested in that ASUS 660, or even the Corsair 300r which is probably overkill for me, and have stuff I could use, let me know and maybe a trade or something might work out. (just a thought for whoever reads this and maybe in the market for such)

Thanks for your time.

So my power supply isnt a good one? I thought it looked pretty decent but that doesnt mean much. All the wires have that black cable rap on them and its got a pretty good size fan. Here are the specs on it. Mine is brand new and I would like to use it if it will work, maybe someone out there has used this brand and can say if its bad or good?

So my PSU is basically just a throw away? What makes a PSU not trustworthy? So if I did use this PSU, whats the kind of issues would it cause? I was thinking if it were just a matter of dieing early and I could use it until it did so and then down the line buy a better one when this one goes.

Playing around on the site mentioned in Pr3di's post there are so many options. I don't know where to start. I don't have unlimited money but also don't want to buy something cheap that I will regret. I was thinking I need to choose a CPU and go from there. I would like to buy used to save money if possible, I have bought used CPU's and SSD's off ebay from reputable sellers and had no issues so I figure why not. Most offer a warranty so your not totally screwed. I was looking around at some used i7 processors to get started and saw this one Or would it be better to go with an i5 that's a little faster like this one?

I realize both those use different sockets so the board would have to match. So do either or these seem like a good CPU to start with?

I know used stuff can be a no no sometimes but for me I am ok with it and understand the risks. Like I mentioned above, its not something I will be running to the max every single day playing games. I mostly use it for general purposes but may play a game once a month or something if I have time.

Go through this if you want some confirmation regarding your PSU: http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/183351-please-read-power-supply-tiers-quoted-from-eggxpert/

It`s a Tier 5 PSU, very poor quality, and the only component in your PC that can destroy other components when it dies.

I say that you should go as strong as possible for the CPU and GPU for the most performance.
But I always say "Never compromise on the PSU". It`s the only thing that can turn your build into a paperweight.

Edit: Regarding the CPU, I don`t recommending going with a generation older than Sandy Bridge or Haswell, even if used.
On old CPUs, even if there was a mild OC done on them, the life span is drastically reduced.

If you can, give us your budget for the upgrade, and we`ll take if from there.
If you want to look into used CPUs, check for a i5 3570k / i5 4670k or i7 3770k / i7 4770k.

The corsair is decent, and it will not let you down. I was even considering it for my build, the exact same model.

I went with a Silverstone PSU because it was confirmed that it`s a great fit in my SFF (Silverstone SG09) case, and it had shorter cables available for it (Silverstone PP01), making the bable management in a very small case a lot better.
