Basically, the situation is as described in the title: Vista cannot connect using an Ethernet cable, but Linux Mint (Rebecca, if it matters) can.

I am writing this on the Vista connected using a 3G dongle. If I reboot the computer, ironically, I cannot connect using the dongle on Linux Mint, but if I plug in my Ethernet cable then I automatically connect to the internet.

If I look in the device manager the only network card entry that shows up is the ZTE Wireless Ethernet Adapter. If you have read this far, it's probably obvious that I am no hardware-guru. However, I do recognize ZTE as the manufacturer of my dongle. Could this mean that Vista doesn't recognize any network driver that is not related to my dongle? If so, is there anything I can do to connect to the internet using the Ethernet cable?

Thank you!

you can either try driver finder software to search your system for outdated/missing drivers and download them or if you can see the model of your lan card (network adapter) you can manually search in google for its driver

You are on the right path. What you see under Network adapters is the dongle. you should have also Unrecognized device. try right click on it and choose Update driver and then "search the internet" while connected via wireless. Your system should automatically discover the correct driver and install it. There might be another outcome - you may either dont see any device that is not recognized or windows fail to find drivers.
in outcome 1 try to scan your system for hardware changes (in device manager)
in outcome 2 see if you can find out the model of your Ethernet card and search for drivers manually in the internet.
im not sure how Mint works but if it have something similar to Device manager you can try see what is your network card model

Thank you, vesp3r! Indeed outcome (1) was accurate. However, I tried to scan the system for hardware changes. It searched for plug and play compatible units but didn't find anything. I don't know what to do now.
