CPU temperatures up to 90 under load, but under 35 in idle [NOOB ALERT]

Hey guys,

I've just bult my new rig, these are the specs:

FD Define R5
ASUS Z97 A
i5 4690K
Scythe Grand Kama Cross 2
Crucial Ballistix Sport 16GB
Crucial MX100 512MB
no GPU so far

I've run that overclocking thingie that ASUS offers. It put my CPU to 100MHz and 44x multiplier. It runs OK (about 31C idle), but whenever I load it with IntelBurnTest Standart test, it quickly rises to 90, then the fan starts spinning (loudly) and the temperatures skyrocket up to 90. They go down to about 60 just before each testing ends.

On stock, the temperature is at 61 max under load. Which seems pretty reasonable, though maybe a bit high.

I had some issues while installing the cooler. I might have used a bit too much of grease (about the size of a half a pea).

What do you think? Should I try to reinstall the cooler?

Thanks for any input!

Intel burn test will push an extra 10c out of most chips over prime stress testing - bear this in mind !
That's still high though - I'd drop back to 4ghz or so - that'll put you firmly mid 70s max under stress testing IMO & I'd consider that acceptable.

What cooler are you using, yes you are right those temps are not acceptable. Generally 60c is the max you want to be running something at for any length of time. My i7 2600 running @ 4.2ghz maxes out at 55c on air cooling.

The overclock you have set may just be too high for that cooler to handle. As for the paste, I just make sure to have a nice even layer of about 1mm thick across the top, spread out with an old ATM card/Credit card.

I would not be pushing an OC over 80c on the CPU under load. Underclock it and reduce the maximum temp under load. Ensure you have nice airflow through your case, and ask yourself if the Intake and Exhaust fans doing their job correctly?

If you were getting 61 under max load with the stock cooler and 90 under max with this aftermarket then yes I would say try reinstalling. perhaps its not seated correctly or make the fan on the cooler isnt working right. perhaps its just not a good cooler, I have never used that unit or brand so I cant say to its quality.
