How do I install 2 x GTX 780 ti into my HP Z800?

Hi there, I've been banging my head against a brick wall as I'm not super technical when it comes to the insides of PCs.

So i've got a HP z800 with a 1100w power supply. From my scouting around inside the PC there appears to only really be 2 6 pin PCIe power outputs to use. Here's a pic: http://cdn.slashgear.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/03/slashgear-hp-event-z-workstations-z800-1.jpg (they are there in between the GPUs and CPUs, on the right hand side with some wires plugged in).

I have 2 x GTX 780 ti cards that both have 2 x 8 pin inputs. How on earth do I power them? What cables do I need? The PSU is rated high enough I believe...

Cheers

Solution

Actually I think he's got the right idea - I can only find 2 spare 6 pin outputs. So it would be turning 2 6 pin into 4 8 pin...

if you look closer at the psu leadfs you will see some look looped 6 pin caan be adapted to 8- pin with the cabling which came with the gpu YOU CAN USE THAT PSU do not listen to the person who says you need a new psu

Admirable
that adapter would be able to power the cards, but its current will be limited to the MAX of the 6-pin connectors - which means the PSU wont be able to power the cards while on full load. while 1100w is plenty of power for 2 780 ti's, the lack of connectors will limit you.

so what are your end goals for this workstation? If its gaming then you have the wrong computer and if it for work them you have the wrong gpus, if your wanting to do both well your just screwed because those two profession do not go hand and hand very well. It better to have two separate computers or one or the other will suffer.

Thanks, so what exactly should I be plugging into? This is the only cables that came with the graphics card: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Molex-PCI-E-Express-Converter-Adapter/dp/B00FHLQURO/ref=sr_1_1?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1424273444&sr=1-1&keywords=8+pin+molex

I'm not sure where I should be plugging those into, especially with 2 gpu's to feed...

It's mostly graphics work aimed at using Blender (http://www.blender.org/) in their cycles render engine. Because cycles can utilise CUDA, the GTX 780's provide plenty of rendering power for not too high a cost.

I won't be gaming on it...

OK look at your psu leads you will see a 6-pin which looks looped that can be used as the 8-pin adapter trust me on this you will have the connectors opn your psu to do this job but YOU WILL need the adapter which came with your GRAPHIC CARDS

What would happen if i tried to power the cards using those connectors? Would they just not function, or could I cause some damage?

so let me get this right.... your taking 2 6pins adapting them to 8 pins then trying to take the 2 8 pins and make them 4 8pins. Let us know when you let the genie out of the PSU.

Your going to be pulling way to many amps through the 2 6pins for that to even try to work.

Alright mate, no need to get arsey! That's why I came here for some advice - I haven't plugged anything into anything else yet.

So what are my options? Is there a way to get more outputs out of the PSU? The z800 seems to have some sort of modular design where everything is replaceable, but doesn't seem to give much flexibility.

NO there should be atleast 4x6-pin leads or 2 6's ans 2 8's with 2 of them 6's you can adapt them to become 8

well with that 1100w psu you should have 2x6 and 2x 6+2 witth the 2x6 put the adapter on them to make them 8 if you only have 4x6 which is unlikely you should be able adapt them all

OK there must be some more power outputs somewhere in the case - I'll have a look. Thanks for your help!

Just an aside - this guy seems to have powered 2 cards by not using the 2 6 pin connectors on the bottom right. Any ideas how? http://www.techpowerup.com/forums/attachments/dualgtx590-jpg.47947/

SORRY THIS MY FAULT you should already have 2 x 6+2 leads then with the GPUI leads molex connectors plugging them both in make another 2 x 8-pin through MOLEX
