Hello there, over the last few months my internet has gone downhill.

I pay for 76Mbps down and i think 24mbps up, however in the last few months it has been decreasing alot. I never actually ran at speeds of 76mbps but i was getting around 60mbps witch i was satisfied with, but then i started to run at around 36mbps and i wasn't too happy about that however i didnt mention it to the isp until it got to the point were i am now getting 5-6mbps!!! Its absolutely awfull.

When i rang the ISP which is BT by the way, they said that i should switch between channels 1 and 6, as the current channel i was running (11) was "congested". So i tried this and.. wow... it went up to 16mbps, it was a slight improvement but bloody hell, for what I'm paying for, it is awful. Anyway, it only lasted at that speed for a few days until it dropped back to around 5mbps, it gets so bad sometimes that i struggle to load the internet page that i have to go on to change the channel of my router :(

Extra Info -
Been with this ISP for around 1year and 6months now i believe, The internet problems started to occur only once we renewed the contract after the first year.

I am With BT, i have the BT Infinity fibre Optic Package, 76Mbps down

The upload speed has not been affected and is often higher than the download speed.

I also have a friend who lives about a mile away from me who has the same package, he gets around 70mbps.

ALSO: Probably worth mentioning that i run on a wireless connection. I have done so since i got this broadband. i am unable to run a wired conection.

Tried complaining to them the other day but you know what their like, they try and make some bizarre excuse as to why its my fault haha :) and i can't change ISPs until the contract is up as i believe i would have to continue paying monthly for it and i don't really have to money to do that at the moment :(

Via wifi 60 mbps was probably as fast as the router and your pc can communicate.

You need to temporarily move the computer or the router/modem so that you can test the speed with wired internet.
With WiFi in the mix then it can be an issue with your wifi connection, with a wired connection the issue pretty much has to be the ISP.

I am unable to run a wired connection to my PC, the router is in the Living room and the PC is Upstairs in a bedroom, would have to drill a whole through the ceiling to use wired connection, unless i go out and get a 30m cable, but i cant be having a wire routed along the floor haha, it shouldnt make much of a difference though as i have been running wireless from way before the problems started to occur :)

This is exactly what you need to do to determine the actual issue.
Is the problem with your ISP, or with your WiFi setup? The only way to know is to remove the WiFi component.

Buy a long enough Cat5e cable. Temporarily run it from the router to the PC. Go to speedtest.net and see what happens.
If you get the full speed you are expecting, then the issue is with your WiFi set up.
If not, then it may well be the ISP's problem.

But you need to eliminate one or the other as being the issue.
