My macbook died the other day and I brought it in for a quote to get fixed and they said $400 to replace hard drive and sata cable. This seems outrageous, so I want to try to fix it myself. The computer still boots into recovery but disk utility cannot find the hard drive. So if I replace the hard drive and cable will I be able to install the OS from online? My only worry is the new hard drive will not be recognized and I won't be able to do anything with it. Thanks for your time.

Hi there rianu090,

After your HDD is not recognized, you will definitely need to change the HDD(and SATA cable if needed). If you do that, I don't see a reason why won't be able to install OS.
You just need to check out the compatible drives: http://support.apple.com/kb/SP649
Here is a guide on how to install the OS: http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201376

Also, it may be a good idea to see some tutorials on how to change the HDD of a MacBook Pro.
