So mistake one: bought a MyBook Live Duo. 3tb. Well, my brother had an extra one, and gave me it.
No sooner did i move all my $#@! over to it...then it stopped showing up on my home network.

My question...how can I take out the 2 hard drives it has, and open the files basically just like an external hard drive? I have and have tried, using a BlacX Duet (that supports up to 3tb) but I can not get the drives to show up in "My Computer"

I also threw away the enclosure for the mybook live duo....smart move, i know, so updating firmware or something similar is not an option.
The data and files are still on the drives, I ran some $#@!ty recovery program and it found 2.5tb of files.

I just dont understand why I cant use the Blackx duet and connect the drives to it and connect that to my computer and open the folders and files like an external....

Hey reven39. I'm sorry to hear you're having such issues with My Book Live Duo. Do you remember if it was set to RAID 0 or 1 when it stopped showing up? It comes out of the box set to RAID 1, which is mirroring (basically when you upload something to My Book Live Duo it writes it on both drives which gives you the option to recover the data in case one of them fails). If this is the case, then you should be able to recover your data from either one of the drives (having in mind they are healthy). You could try accessing them via Linux Live CD/USB or try some of the data recovery options from this thread here: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/id-1644496/lost-data-recovery.html

On the other hand, if it was RAID 0, then unfortunately the chances of recovering the data decrease dramatically, especially if you don't have your external enclosure. :(
If this is the case, you could try with your brother's enclosure set to RAID 0, to see if you'll be able to get the data (because it has the same RAID controller)

Hope that helps. Good luck!
