First time building my gaming computer. Want the best and most efficient power supply. Don't plan on overclocking. On a tight budget as well, trying not to spend $35 (give or take)

Currently have...
CPU: AMD FX-6300
MOBO: Asus M5A78L-M/USB3
Memory: G.Skill Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB)
Storage: WD Caviar Blue 1TB
Video Card: MSI Radeon R9 290

Power supply requirements here:

http://www.realhardtechx.com/index_archivos/Page362.htm

Please, please and double please never recommend a Coolmax power supply to anyone under any circumstances. They are complete trash tier.

PSU tier list.

http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/id-1804779/power-supply-unit-tier-list.html

And another one.

https://community.newegg.com/eggxpert/computer_hardware/f/135081/t/45344.aspx?Redirected=true

See where Coolmax is listed on both tier lists? There is a reason for that. They go boom when stressed. And have a habit of taking other parts with them when they blow.

Edit: Here is a typical Coolmax review from the best power supply review site on the internet, jonnyguru.

Hadn't known about the tier list, nor knew that Coolmax was that bad :ouch: Didn't see much bad about them. Will make sure to remember this, thanks.

After looking at the requirements and tier, any trusted 650W PSU would work, correct?

Sure thing. Power supplies are something I feel strongly about if you can't tell ;)

Those tier lists are very good and belong in your favorites if you are going to be recommending units. Also if you ever want info on a specific unit this is the most comprehensive database on the internet.

We try to recommend tier 2 and up for any "gaming" build especially with overclocking involved. Tier 3 can be used if it's the only thing available regionally or in low power builds. Tiers 4 and 5 should never be used.

Yes. All XFX units are made by Seasonic and as such are of the highest quality. That model I recommended above gives you 80 Plus Gold efficiency to go with the quality of the unit. Very good for the price. The only downside is it's not modular. But yes, any tier 2 and up would be fine. Just make sure the model you are looking at is the model on the list. EVGA in particular has the worst naming scheme in the world and they can get confusing as to whats what.

Would it be okay if I used a 600W PSU, or does 650W actually play a HUGE difference? And what's the difference between a no modular vs. a modular PSU?

The first minute of this explains modular vs non modular. I will never buy another non modular unit myself. A modular unit makes cable management so easy.

You really want 650 watts unless you are buying a high end unit.

EVGA is not bad I only said their naming scheme is confusing. The high end EVGA units are among the best on the market. That particular model is not one of their high end units though. So although it is modular it is not as good electrically as the XFX above. So electrical stability vs aesthetics. I would pick the XFX.

That EVGA is tier 3 on our list while the XFX is a very solid tier 2.
