my verbatim external hdd is showing E Drive on my computer and wants me to format it please help!!!

My External HDD fell and now when I plug it in my computer it say "Local Disk (E : )" and when I want to open it says I must format it.

What it say: "You need to format the disk in drive E: before you can use it.
"Do you want to format it?"

I'm scared if I format it I will loss all my files.
Please Help me.

Hi there christellegr,

You shouldn't try to format the drive as it could be data destructive.
Apart from that(and if we assume that the drive is not physically damaged from the hit), you can try using some partition/data recovery tools in order to retrieve the data. Many times, this problem occurs when the USB cable is unsafely unplugged. It may be a good idea to try the chkdsk command if the recovery tools can't retrieve the data: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/296941-32-files-external-hard-drive-formatting
