Noob question: Installing Radeon HD 6570 in Windows 8.1 machine - no HDMI signal

Hello all and thanks in advance.

I'm trying to pull a Radeon HD 6570 card out of my Dell Vostro 470 running Windows 7 Professional and move it into a new Inspiron 3847 (brand new, retail, no modifications) running Windows 8.1. I had gotten it running on the Windows 7 machine but don't remember exactly how.

We've installed the Catalyst software and drivers from the AMD site. The catch-22 is this: if the card is installed in the PCIe slot and hooked up via HDMI, I get no signal and have to shut down. If the card is installed and I have the HDMI cable hooked up to the integrated graphics, Windows boots and gives me a warning that the display adapter is disabled and I need to do a cold restart and move the HDMI connector to the Radeon card ... which then gives me no signal.

I've removed the card and checked to see if there's anything I can do with the BIOS, but I can't find anything useful there. I can't check the BIOS with the card installed, because I'm back to no signal and can't see what I'm doing.

Any advice? Windows 8.1 is a mystery to me.

Did you check your power supply to make sure it will run the 6570? The Vostro models come in different sizes and different power supplies. All power plugs in the video card?

Did you disable the onboard video in Device Manager before swapping the card? The instructions for the card probably state you need to do that first.

Thanks for the responses. I haven't had a chance to try anything yet ... I had to jam the card back into the old machine for work purposes. Hopefully I can fool with it this weekend. (Although I'm sure I'll eventually end up with a more powerful card for the Inspiron.)

Both very helpful answers, thanks. I hadn't disabled the onboard video, and knew nothing about disabling secure boot (or that secure boot existed).

Here's what's happening now. I messed with it for about an hour and finally got the Radeon card running. Finally -- now I'll just screw everything back together and be done with it. Of course, the next time I booted up, I was back to square 1 and the black screen with no signal. Is there some change I have to make to make the video card selection persistent?

Sure enough, turns out the Inspiron has only a 300 watt power supply. I ended up picking up a GT 730 and installation was a breeze. Now I just have to grab a mini HDMI cable.

Thanks again for the help -- you saved my sanity.
