in a cpu intensive game will a i5 4690k outperform a i7 950

Solution
The newer i5 will probably be a little faster on average, but at the same time, I couldn't justify recommend anyone doing that from of upgrade. Really isn't justified.

Really, even the i7 920 is still perfectly viable for gaming. Sure, you lose a little bit of CPU performance, but odds are, you're GPU limited anyway.

im easily running my i7 950 at 4.1ghz with only a slight to moderate voltage increase have been for some time. the I7 950 is like a first gen i7. but I wonder about gaming because I don't seem to use more then 85% of my gpu on a lot of mmo games I play wich tells me its cpu intensive. so am wondering because although the i5 is only an i5 my i7 is about 5years old

I'm not sure HT is of NO use. There are a few games that can make use of more than 4 threads. BF4 and Arma 3 come to mind. The lowly i3 improves on its gaming capabilities with its 2 HT cores by being able to execute 4 threads simultaneously.

And if one likes to have other tasks running in the background while gaming, the extra threads will come in handy there too.

If you have your i7-950 up to 4.1 GHz, first of all... congrats. Next, what settings have you used?
My i7-875K could never get very good clock speed when I had it.

In these cases, the hyperthreading is of use, but for pure gaming there is little reason to chose an i7 over an i5.

There we are in perfect agreement.

well I am using more volts then average I think at 1.31 I have seen on the web many people hit 4ghz on as little as 1.2v as seen in many reviews im not so lucky however my processor prolly has some wear thus requiring a little more

I don't know my exact settings right of but qpi/vtt is 1.33 and cpu 1.31v and memory 1.65

we have kinda got off the subject hyperthreading aint the question I was only wondering if in games a newer i5 4690k would outperform an i7 950 in CPU intensive games. I play a lot of mmo's and they seem to sometimes not even use 100%gpu

+1

The only games where CPU performance really comes into effect (aside from GPU bottlenecking) are the Crysis, Metro, and ArmA games. There are others, but those are the most notable games series.
But all that said and done, your i7 should be adequate.

The chart available on the forum (link below) shows processors ranked in terms of gaming power and, as it says in the post, you shouldn't really think about upgrading unless your chosen upgrade is at least three tiers higher. Your i7 920 is in tier 3, and the i5 4690K in tier 1, so you've no reason to upgrade for gaming - especially if you're overclocking it.
