Exceed Maximum RAM

I was thinking of upgrading my RAM in my laptop, so I went on uk.crucial.com.

I believe my laptop currently has two 4GB DDR3 cards installed, making a total of 8GB ram. But I was wondering If I'd be able to double that up to 16GB ram by getting two 8GB cards.

But now I'm not sure If I can do this, as after the scan results on Crucial, it states the following.

Maximum memory: 10240MB Slots:1 (1 bank of 1) *Not to exceed manufacturer supported memory.

Does this mean that I shouldn't go over 10GB RAM?

Here is a screenshot of the Crucial Scan Results. http://i.imgur.com/HaCFrgn.jpg
Thanks, any help is appreciated!

Yeah, I wouldn't exceed that limit. get 8GB and be happy.

That's a weird screenshot. A lot of the modern laptops come with some or all soldered memory. It could be that you have 4GB soldered in, and one expansion slot which currently has a 4GB SO-DIMM. In that case theoretically you could replace the SO-DIMM with an 8GB and get 12GB.

I can't figure out any way to arrive at a 10GB max like Crucial is saying, so I have to think that's an error in their database. Cross-reference it with Kingston's memory database. Also, open up the memory cover and physically inspect what's on the laptop - see if it's one slot, two slots, or one slot with 4GB soldered.

The laptop motherboard or CPU won't be able to handle above 10GB in that case - do if you do upgrade it will only use one of the RAM sticks so you'll still have 8GB.

To be honest, you won't see much of a performance difference between 8GB and 16GB on a laptop anyway.
