I know that tech moves forward and nothing is "future proof" - but how long will my system be "fast"? and high-end?

PSU: Corsair AX860
CPU: Intel core i7-4790k @4.4GHz
GPU: MSi Gaming GTX 980 OC 4gb
Motherboard: MSi Z97 Gaming 5
RAM: 24 gb Crucial Ballistix sport (2x 8gb + 2x 4gb)
CPU-cooler: Noctua NH-U9B SE2
SSD: 2x Kingston SSDNow V300 120gb
HDD: 2x Western Digital WD Black WD4001FAEX 4TB

More or less the former.

However, don't know how Skylake will affect things. Maybe the lowest version of Skylake will be 1000x faster than what you have now. Or, on the GPU side, maybe the R9 5xx card will come out and be equivalent to a triple SLI GTX 980. Who knows.

But combined with proper maintenance, your setup will probably never reach the slow end of the scale.
