As described in the title, i need to transfer pics and music from my hp hard drive (which was running win7ultx64) to either my seagate 1tb external or my 1tb internal on my ROG (which runs win8.1). Can i simply place the drive in my extra slot in the ROG and access the files from explorer? Any help would be excellent.

As long as you have a SATA connector that will plug into the drive. It may be easier to purchase a HDD dock or HDD enclosure and plug it into the USB port to transfer the data.

You will probably have to "take ownership" of the files to access them if they are not shared to "everybody".

In theory this should work. I've done it many times in thinkpads using the ultrabay as the second connector. Runs faster than usb2 attach when transferring files.

Did you have a hard drive password on the sata drive? I've seen a drive not recognized if encrypted using tcg encryption when the laptop did not know how to serve the password.

Is there any enabling you need to do in the laptop bios for the 2nd sata drive?

As said above a USB to sata connector is cheap. But putting the drive in as a second drive should work and will be up to 5X faster than USB2 when transferring big things (100mb/sec vs. 20mb/sec.)
