Trying to troubleshoot my first-ever "power on" attempts (my first build.)

Upon powering on my first-ever self-built PC, I was met with... trouble. I am sometimes able to get to the bootup screen for Windows 8 64bit (booting via optical drive,) but I cannot use my mouse or keyboard to select anything. The second time this happened, I was met with a Machine Check Error. Yikes. After this happens, it's difficult to even get to that prompt, as the mobo declines to even output anything.

My build:
i5 4430
MSI GTX 970
MSI z97 g45 Gaming mobo
Rosewill Capstone 650 PSU
Trying to boot to a 128gb SSD connected via a normal SATA connector.

Things I have done wrong at first:
Connected the front panel connectors (Power LED, etc) improperly.
Been a bit unsure about the PCI connectors from the PSU to the GTX (I have both the 8 pin via adapter connected, as well as the joining 6-pin.) Still a bit iffy on this, actually.

When I power on, the CPU fan and GPU come to life, but after the first boot, it would not get back to the mobo's prompt screen for boot device selection. I remedied this by unplugging and replugging a bunch of stuff, but even getting back to the Windows language etc selection screen, I cannot use my kb/m.

My kb: A usb-connected CM Storm Quickfire
My mouse: Logitech G502

I went into this blind, and tutorials have been helpful, but most of them seem to still presuppose some know-how I apparently lack. So any ideas as to what might be good courses of action to take to diagnose and fix this are appreciated.

remove graphics card. plug monitor into onboard video output. try to set up like that, bare-bones sort of. once that works, plug in graphics card and see what happens.

which slots did you put the ram sticks into? um, you do have ram, right? it's not listed in your build...

I do. 8gb Kingston Fury, slotted in the second slot from the cpu. Sorry, I didn't list the entire build, though perhaps I should have. Update: using a really old keyboard let me get to the install process :) If I continue experiencing any problems, I will take your advice and yank all but the direct output. Thank you!

It seems I need to yank everything anyway hehe. Got Win 8 installed yet still no usb input. Got to the BIOS screen, however, and both USB mouse and kb worked, until it froze. Now windows will barely stay booted, and the pc is shutting itself off.

I received a system message about PCI elements not being compatible as well. Gonna remove the GPU and go from there. Thanks so much again, giantbucket.

Well, it appears I might be screwed. Beyond frustrating!

Removed the GPU and managed to get Win* installed, but have no input control beyond a ps/2 keyboard. That's when it boots to windows at all, which is about half the time.

Getting into the BIOS is hard, and it seems that it never accepts del upon boot, only f11, which gives me a menu from which I can select the BIOS.

Problem is, once in BIOS, my kb and mouse only work for about a minute and a half before they stop accepting input. My temp is staying at 34 degrees, btw. Something keeps making my inputs turn off.

Update 2: Now it is starting to just shut down after firing up for half a second. I fear it may be a CPU or PSU issue now.
