I have a Cooler Master Elite Power - 460W Power Supply. It only has one 6-pin PCI-e cable. I am thinking about getting a new graphics card, specifically the ATI 6870. The card requires two 6-pin PIC-e power cables. Is it a good idea to buy a 4-pin to 6-pin adapter and use the one 6-pin cable with a 4-pin molex turned into a 6-pin to power the graphics card? I don't want to overload the PSU or risk making the computer unstable.

It will work when you have NO OTHER CHOICE.

Calculate your power supply in above link. If it less than 400w recommended less than 350w you are Ok. And if more than this then you will need a higher wattage PSU. And remember don't overclock with this PSU. :)

I have heard some bad things about the PSU model not being able to truly deliver on the full 460 watts. If the PSU is not able to deliver the necessary wattage would that risk destroying the video card or any other component?

No PSU delivers of its full efficiency. It always deliver 85-86% of its specs. That's why the efficiency is given. It concerts the Alternate current that come in our house to direct current. In this process some energy loss because of the transformer. The PSU will not destroy the GPU till you don't overclock it. If you try to overclock, you will have a major risk. But till it is best. :)

But suppose it really junks out and can't supply the necessary wattage. Would the graphics card or any other component risk being broken because of the lack of necessary power?
