Alright, so I updated my Dell Inspiron 14 3421 laptop which came with a pre-installed Windows 8 to Windows 8.1 purely because Microsoft insisted. I resisted for quite a while before giving in to it, unaware of the flurry of problems that would accompany the update. As has popularly been the case, my laptop has started overheating when I'm running CPU/GPU intensive programs such as games, HD videos etc. ~my PC abruptly shuts down without warning after a while as temps reach a whooping 90C which literally burns your fingers~ - problems which were virtually non-existent on my Windows 8 machine (I ran it for quite a while). I don't know whether its because of the dedicated GPU my laptop packs (Nvidia Geforce 730M) but temperatures generally seem to be higher as well (hovering at 45-60C when idle) Anyway my question: Is it possible to undo the upgrade? Many seem to be having difficulties doing it, please tell me you have a way.
Appreciated.

If you had recovery discs that came with the computer or if you made a set, then those discs would come with the default OS which in this case would be Windows 8. If you didn't make the discs or if it didn't come with it. Try resetting your computer and seeing if there is a recovery partition in which you can use to restore the factory install.

Resetting/Refreshing the computer yields a message declaring that I have some 'files missing which would be provided by the installation media'. Problem is I don't have any - it's an OEM version. I do have a recovery partition but my guess is it would only work with Windows 8, seeing that message.

Sorry for taking so long to update, I have a two year old to regularly attend to. Anyway, I've been researching your method and even tried it on my laptop but there's some kind of issue with my dell backup and recovery which doesn't show up at all when I do the powerful restart (no such option at all in the 'troubleshoot options' tab. At this point, I'd even settle for lower temps in Windows 8.1 if that somehow isn't beyond the realm of possibility. Again, any help appreciated.
